Handling the hack

Published on 11 Dec, 2018 by Jemma

As 2018 draws to a close, we take a look back on a great project we’ve been a part of throughout this year: JLL’s first ever UK Hackathon.

The objective of the Hackathon was to stimulate innovation among JLL’s employees and see what ideas could be generated internally in order to solve key market challenges using innovative and/or digital solutions. It would welcome ideas from anyone in the UK business – from apprentice through to senior managers.

The process began back in June when teams submitted their entries and came to a nail-biting end when the four finalists battled it out in the ‘JLL Dragons Den’ on 31 October . . .

“It’s time for the first idea to be pitched in the Den. Glenn Briski is trying to win the Dragons over with his idea to use smart contracts to automate tenancy payments.”
“Next into the den is Tim Barber-Lomax and Kim Markiewicz with their idea to enable renters to become investors.”
“Louis Goldney Sidley is now presenting his idea to unlock additional funds for PropTech investment.”
“Last into the Den is Richard Sansom with his idea to create a new JLL chatbot (JiLL) to solve the many pain points of navigating a large business.

We played an instrumental role by helping guide the finalists through their journey from idea submission to pitch preparation – providing them with digital business expertise and ideation. James and Jonathan also had an enormous amount of empathy for the contestants from having first-hand experience of this kind of competition when they won the EEDA Running the Gauntlet event many years ago.

And the winner is…

Richard Sansom, Project Manager, whose chatbot ‘JiLL’ will now be developed to create a proof of concept tool, with a wider rollout planned following successful trials.

“Feeling honoured to have been given the faith by the @JLLUK board to develop my idea of ‘Meet JiLL’. Congrats to all those who put all their efforts into creating ideas and presentations for #JLLHackathon. Now watch this space!” – @RichardSansom_

Congratulations to Richard on his win and to JLL for encouraging the development of innovative tech solutions among their employees. Following its success JLL is looking to run the Hackathon again.
